Preparing for Your Weight Loss Consultation
As this consultation is conducted via telemedicine, physical examination is limited. For this reason, baseline blood investigations are often recommended to assist our doctors in making a safe, appropriate, and effective treatment decision.
Some weight-loss medications require baseline assessment and ongoing monitoring. The need for blood tests depends on your medical history, existing conditions, and potential contraindications. Not having blood results available does not prevent your consultation or discussion of treatment options.
If you already have recent blood results, please email them in advance to doctors@zapmed.co.za in preparation for your consultation. If required, your consulting doctor may request some or all blood tests during or after your appointment.
If you would like to arrange blood tests beforehand, please email the same address and we will gladly assist.
Blood tests that may be requested by your consulting doctor include:
HbA1c or fasting glucose, urea, creatinine and eGFR, liver function tests (ALT, AST ± ALP, GGT, bilirubin), thyroid function (TSH ± Free T4), lipid profile, full blood count, and in selected cases amylase or lipase.

Weight-Loss Treatment FAQ’s
How much does Zapmed’s weight-loss service cost?
Our weightloss service is available in either a once-off treatment regime, or a monthly repeatable subscription.
Once-off weight loss treatment is available from R799 on medical aid (service fee is paid privately and medication costs are attempted on claim via your medical aid details), or from R1940 cash (R799 service fee + medication starting point price).
Our subscription service is available from R450 with medical aid, or from R1410 per month (R450 subscription fee + starting point medication price).
Does Zapmed replace my primary doctor?
No, our service is complementary to your existing healthcare provider.
Can I claim my consultation and medication costs from my medical aid?
Your consultation fee will be charged privately via Zapmed. After your consultation, you’ll receive an invoice containing the relevant telehealth consultation ICD code, which you can use to submit a claim directly to your medical aid provider.
Medication costs may be claimed on your behalf by our partner pharmacy. Please note that successful claims depend on your specific medical aid and plan benefits, and approval cannot be guaranteed. If a claim is unsuccessful, you’ll be notified and will need to settle the medication cost in cash to proceed.
Alternatively, you’re welcome to pay cash for both your consultation and medication, and use the invoices provided to claim directly from your medical aid provider.
When and how is my medication delivered?
Once you have completed your consultation and paid for your medication, your order will be dispatched and delivered within 1-3 business days, in discreet packaging to your door.
Kindly note, as most weight loss medications are fridge-line medications, these are labelled and delivered accordingly within 48 hours.
Fridge-line medications such as GLP-1 agonists must remain within a controlled temperature range to stay effective. In most cases, they must be stored within your fridge. These instructions will be discussed with you during your consultation and within your medication instructions. Please refer to these instructions to ensure proper effectiveness.
What is medical weight loss?
Medical weight loss uses prescription medications, such as GLP-1 receptor agonists, under the supervision of a licensed doctor, to help you safely reduce weight when lifestyle changes alone are not enough.
What causes weight gain and difficulty losing weight?
Factors include genetics, hormones, metabolism, lifestyle, certain medications, and underlying health conditions. Our Partner Doctors will explore these with you to recommend the right treatment plan.
Who is eligible for treatment?
Weight-loss medication may be recommended if you:
– Have a BMI of 30 or higher, or
– Have a BMI of 27 or higher with a weight-related health condition (such as type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, or high cholesterol).
Can I get weight-loss treatment online?
Yes. After completing a medical assessment and virtual consultation, your doctor can prescribe treatment if appropriate.
How effective are weight-loss medications?
GLP-1 treatments can help patients lose an average of 10-22% of body weight when combined with healthy lifestyle changes.
Can weight come back after stopping treatment?
Yes, weight regain can occur if lifestyle changes are not maintained. Doctors may suggest a long-term plan to support sustainable results. We also have your online health coach to give you tips and guidance you towards maintaining your lifestyle changes.
Are there risks or side effects?
Yes, side effects could include nausea, constipation, or stomach upset. Serious risks are rare but will be discussed during your consultation.
How long is the treatment plan?
Treatment plans vary. Some patients stay on medication for several months, while others may continue longer, depending on health goals and medical advice.
